Trend Chart - Violent Crimes Per Square Mile

There are four standard violent crime categories that are a part of a Uniform Crime Report - Homicide, Rape, Assault and Robbery.

The chart in the upper right may more accurately reflect the usual pattern of violent crimes. It combines Robbery, Assault and crimes of Battery.

Battery is not a part of the Uniform Crime Report. The line between this category and the more serious charge of Assault is somewhat arbitrary.

Note that the Assaults in 1984-86 are higher than usual throughout the city. This was the result of a short term state law requiring charges for all domestic abuse calls.

These charts are useful because they represent the density of crime per square mile in a way that permits comparison with city trends. The black line on each chart represents the city statistics.
