Impact of the 2007-09 Economic Recession on Nonprofit Organizations

The current recession has already resulted in serious economic costs for our nation. Although the media has focused on the downturn’s severe effects on businesses, there has been little attention on how it has impacted our country’s critical nonprofit sector. To help fill this major gap in knowledge, the Johns Hopkins Nonprofit Listening Post project surveyed its nationwide sample of nonprofit organizations in five key fields in April of 2009.
Wisconsin State of Philanthropy Report 2009
The Donors Forum of Wisconsin recently issued the 2009 Wisconsin State of Philanthropy Report, which provides an overview of charitable giving in Wisconsin, a look at the different types of grantmaking in the state, a section on the economic downturn, an in-depth look at where grant dollars are allocated, and an inside look at the inner workings of foundations.
Giving USA 2009 Released
Charitable giving in the United States exceeded $300 billion for the second year in a row in 2008, according to Giving USA 2009. Donations to charitable causes in the United States reached an estimated $307.65 billion in 2008, a 2 percent drop in current dollars over 2007. Giving USA is an annual report on philanthropy, published by the Giving USA Foundation and written and researched at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. Learn about Public Policy Issues Affecting Wisconsin Nonprofits
The Wisconsin Nonprofits Association (WNA) has been monitoring state legislation that would affect the property tax exemption for low-income nonprofit rental housing. Stay informed on key public policy issues affecting nonprofits by visiting the WNA’s Legislative Action Center, and by signing up to receive updates.

MLINC Invites Applications for 2009-2010 Marquette Strategic Analysis
Is your Wisconsin nonprofit interested in seeking the benefits of the Marquette Strategic Analysis for nonprofits? One Wisconsin nonprofit will be selected to receive a free comprehensive strategic analysis, review of legal documents, and marketing and fundraising consultation. The deadline for applications is July 10, 2009.
Nominations Solicited for 2009 Good Grant Award ($5,000)
The Donors Forum of Wisconsin is soliciting nominations for the 2009 Good Grant Award, sponsored by Rockwell Automation, to honor funders and grantees who have demonstrated leadership through a creative partnership. The deadline for nominations is July 15, 2009.

Diana Aviv to Speak at Donors Forum Luncheon, September 11
In place of its annual daylong conference for grantmakers and grantseekers, the Donors Forum of Wisconsin is hosting a luncheon on September 11, to celebrate the National Day of Service and Remembrance. The luncheon will feature a keynote presentation, ”Fashioning a Path to a More Sustainable Future,” by Independent Sector President and CEO Diana Aviv. Ms. Aviv is a leading national and international speaker on emerging trends within the nonprofit sector, public policies affecting charities and foundations, and the role of civil society in democracy.

This annual conference will be held on September 22, 2009 from 3-8:30 p.m. Featured topics will include fundraising, working with consultants, hiring and working with volunteers, reading and understanding financial statements, technology, and more.
