In a recent Op-Ed piece in the Chronicle of Philanthropy, nonprofit sector scholar Lester Salamon outlines some ideas for how the new Administration and Congress could usefully enlist the nation's nonprofit organizations to assist in our nation's economic recovery program. Among the recommendations: adopt emergency incentives for private giving and volunteering; create a matching grant program to support nonprofit soup kitchens, homeless shelters, and other organizations that provide services to the needy; and underwrite a three-year effort by nonprofit housing and community development organizations to help low-income homeowners rework their mortgages to avoid possible foreclosures.
2009 Charitable Events Guide
The February issue of Milwaukee Magazine includes a special insert, the Charitable Events Guide, a comprehensive calendar of special events planned by nonprofits in southeastern Wisconsin. The guide also includes an article featuring service clubs and professional groups that play a role in philanthropy and volunteering, along with profiles of five local leaders contributing to the success of nonprofits in Milwaukee.

Spring Nonprofit Research Colloquium Series Kicks Off February 4
The Nonprofit Research Colloquium Series, sponsored by the Helen Bader Institute for Nonprofit Management at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, will kick off in February with presentations on February 4 and February 11. Colloquia are held on the UWM campus from 12-1:30 p.m. unless otherwise specified.
February 4: "The Role of Rating Agencies in the Market for Charitable Contributions: An Empirical Test" (Dan Neely, UWM Department of Accounting)
February 11: “Investigating Participation of Nonprofit Organizations in Collaborative Governance” (Rina Ghose, UWM Department of Geography) and “Neighborhood-based Conservation: Restoring Natural and Cultural Resources (Sharon Adams, Walnut Way Conservation Corporation and Nik Heynen, University of Georgia)

UEDA Wisconsin Hosts Brown Bag Featuring IFF Loan Program on January 30
IFF, formerly the Illinois Facilities Fund, is the largest Community Development Financial Institution in the Midwest and has announced plans to open a new Wisconsin office in February. Robin Toewe, Assistant Director of Business Development at IFF will share information on IFF’s loan program. The Brown Bag will be held at the Nonprofit Center of Milwaukee Conference Room, located at 2819 West Highland Avenue. Bring your lunch and assorted beverages will be provided. Wisconsin Nonprofits Association Announces Search for Executive Director
The board of directors of the Wisconsin Nonprofits Association is seeking a full-time Executive Director. The deadline for applications is March 13, 2009.
Combined Federal Campaign Accepts Applications, Offers Training
Beginning March 5, the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) of Greater Wisconsin is accepting applications for charitable organizations to participate in the 2009 campaign. The deadline for applications is April 9. Charitable organizations providing health and welfare services to 46 Wisconsin counties (including Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Washington, Waukesha, Kenosha and Racine) are encouraged to apply. For those preparing an application, a training session will be held on March 10 in Milwaukee.
