NONPROFITS IN THE NEWS
A Guide to Giving
Late in February, PBS' Nightly Business Report aired a three-part series about philanthropy. PBS called on scholars at Indiana University’s Center on Philanthropy for extensive research and information for the series. Did you miss it? You can still access one-page transcripts of “Charity’s Role in the Economy,” “The Worthiness Formula” and “Cyber Charities.”
PUBLICATIONS AND REPORTS
Working Board vs. Governing Board
In the January 2008 issue of Board Café, a monthly e-newsletter from Compass Point Nonprofit Services, Jan Masaoka provides a thoughtful distinction between the work of a board, and the active engagement of board members in the organization’s program, fundraising and administrative work.
The Nonprofit Workforce Challenge: Real or Imagined?
Workforce recruitment and retention issues have recently triggered considerable concern within the nonprofit sector. But the assumption that nonprofits are losing out in the competitive market for personnel does not seem to be borne out by the actual experience of nonprofit organizations, at least as revealed in a study published recently by the Listening Post Project at the Johns Hopkins Institute for Policy Studies and Center for Civil Society Studies.
Seen but Not Heard: Strengthening Nonprofit Advocacy
This recent publication of the Aspen Institute’s Nonprofit Sector Research Fund provides new research findings about the extent of nonprofit advocacy while also detailing the barriers and incentives for nonprofits seeking to engage in various types of policy activities, including lobbying.
