Mobilizing Change: 10 Nonprofit Policy Innovations to Strengthen U.S. Communities
The stature and importance of the nonprofit sector has grown considerably in recent decades, yet—except for issues of oversight and accountability—policymakers pay scant attention to nonprofit organizations. An enormous opportunity exists to develop public policies that enhance the sector’s capacity to benefit our communities. This set of proposals, identified by the Aspen Institute, provides a starting point for a bi-partisan commission to focus on maximizing the relationship between government and civil society.
Wisconsin Nonprofit Sector Report: More than Charity
The Wisconsin nonprofit sector is a major economic force, strengthening our state every day. It has grown by 70 percent over the past ten years. In 2005, there were over 31,000 Wisconsin nonprofits that employed 8.9 percent of the state’s total workforce, marking a 5.2 percent employment growth rate over 2004 and pushing Wisconsin well above the national trend of nonprofits employing 7 percent of the workforce, according to the Wisconsin Nonprofit Sector Report – More Than Charity, a new report by the Wisconsin Nonprofits Association (WNA).
Coming Soon: 2008 Edition of Foundations in Wisconsin Marquette University 's Raynor Library annually publishes Foundations in Wisconsin: a Directory. It is the only directory of its kind which covers every active, grantmaking foundation in the state of Wisconsin. 1,251 foundations are profiled, including contact information, total assets, grants paid and areas of interest.

September 23: Forum on the Nonprofit Sector: Individual Giving featuring Patrick Rooney
“The Role of Individual Giving in Sustaining Nonprofits” is the topic of a Forum on the Nonprofit Sector to be held Tuesday, September 23 from 8:30-11:00 am. Patrick Rooney, a nationally recognized scholar on philanthropy, will explore the role individual charitable giving can realistically play in supporting nonprofits and their work. Nonprofit leaders and stakeholders are invited to participate.
The Forum is part of a series on Financing Nonprofits sponsored by the Helen Bader Institute in partnership with the Donors Forum of Wisconsin and the Nonprofit Management Fund.
Helen Bader Institute Announces September Nonprofit Research Colloquia
For those interested in research on nonprofit management and philanthropy, mark your calendars for two upcoming nonprofit research colloquia sponsored by the Helen Bader Institute for Nonprofit Management, featuring nationally recognized scholars. Colloquia are held at UWM from 4-5:30 p.m.
September 16: “More Pieces to the Puzzle: A Review and Assessment of Recent Nonprofit Board Research” (David O. Renz , Director, Midwest Center for Nonprofit Leadership, University of Missouri-Kansas City)
September 22 : “Current Research on Individual Giving: Methods and Results” (Patrick Rooney , Director of Research, Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University)
Milwaukee Legal Initiative for Nonprofit Corporations (M-LINC) Seeks Milwaukee Nonprofits for Free, Comprehensive, Legal and Strategic Analysis
Nonprofits confronting a legal issue necessitating a multi-disciplinary or strategic response are eligible to apply. If selected for participation, the nonprofit’s designated executive staff and board delegate will meet regularly with an interdisciplinary team of faculty, students, and community advisors to address the legal, financial, governance, and public relations aspects of the issue presented. Applications are due September 17, 2008

September 17: Honoring our Past, Embracing Our Future
The Ninth Annual Conference on Philanthropy marks the 30th anniversary of the Donors Forum of Wisconsin. The conference provides an opportunity for grantmakers, nonprofit agency executives and fellow associates in the philanthropic community to share their experiences, learn new tools and assess their past achievements and endeavors. Registration closes September 12.
September 16: Risk Management Conference for Managers of Volunteers
Sponsored by the Association for Volunteer Administration of Southeastern Wisconsin and the Interagency Council on volunteerism.
September 23: 2008 Nonprofit Board Development Conference (UW-Parkside)
The 2008 conference, “Strengthening Boards, Empowering Nonprofit Organizations,” will feature a keynote address from Anne Howden, national consultant to nonprofit organizations and foundations. Her presentation, "Nonprofit Lifecycles: Stage-Based Wisdom for Nonprofit Capacity" will describe how the "stage of life" of your organization impacts effective governance.
