Intimate partner violence has steadily decreased between 1993 and 2004, from 5.8 victimizations per 1,000 people to 2.6 victimizations per 1,000 people. An intimate partner is a current or former spouse, boyfriend, girlfriend or same-sex partner. Officials believe the drop is due to specialized domestic violence law enforcement agencies and prosecution teams.
