The task force appointed by Mayor Norquist found that the arts in metropolitan Milwaukee do not have stable funding for more than 2 years at a time. At the time of the study, 22% of arts groups received government funding, however government funding for the arts has declined. The arts groups acquired more than half of their funds through private donations and the remaining portion was raised by ticket sales. Arts organizations add a lot to the economy by drawing people from outside the area to performances and providing employment equivalent to a top 25 company. Because of the tight economy, cooperative efforts between arts groups is encouraged. Programs promoting arts education and fostering artists' neighborhoods and other artist friendly environments are also priorities. Having a good art community draws businesses and provides those businesses with both culture for their workers and the local skilled labor necessary for advertising, communications and other business needs. |
