The authors state that housing affordability problems are due to several factors: the loss of manufacturing jobs, income tax deductions for upper income households, restrictions of local zoning laws, and the lack of affordable housing in the suburbs. They say that what is necessary to alleviate these is the political mobilization to act on the many possible solutions that have been generated.
