www.sschc.org | | | Reports on the success of a community outreach effort by the Sixteenth Street Community Health Center to help the Milwaukee Health Department reach children with high rates of lead poisoning who had escaped more traditional screening venues. Through door-to-door testing, household education and clean-up of lead hazards, the project reduced blood lead levels to an acceptable range. The demonstrated ability of outreach workers to access high-risk populations and reduce exposure to lead hazards suggests the potential of extending this strategy to address other prevalent urban health problems like asthma, injures and violence. |
