The criminal justice system across the United States has incarcerated hundreds of thousands of the mentally ill. They are often subject to abuse at the hands of other inmates while in prison. Effective treatment programs for these people are few and far between. This article advocates for those in the system who are not undergoing needed counseling and treatment. Without a critical examination of the methods used by the criminal justice system, the system will pomote and be complicit in inmate on inmate crime and violence.
