The Milwaukee Metro Patterns: Sprawl and Social Separation in Metro Milwaukee study is an analysis of the development of sprawl that has occurred in the Milwaukee region and offers a sustained community driven campaign proposal. The study notes that between 1975 and 1993 the number of new businesses in Milwaukee County grew by 16%, while the number of businesses in the three outstanding counties (Waukesha, Washington and Ouzaukee) grew by 114%. Thus, the proposal suggests that Milwaukee could greatly benefit from creating transportation systems to link central city workers to jobs in the outlining areas. In addition, the study recommends that Milwaukee pursue transportation and land use plans that encourage transit-oriented development to thus reduce automobile dependency and lessen social and environmental costs.
