A Regional Freeway System Reconstruction Plan for Southeastern Wisconsin identifies those segments of the Southeastern Wisconsin Freeway System (SWFS) which will need to be rebuilt in the next thirty years as well as recommending whether those identified segments should be rebuilt as is, with minor redesign, with substantial redesign or with additional lanes. The study predicts the potential cost for each reconstruction project as well as its potential tax base impact on the various counties. For example, the study estimates that it will cost approximately $156 million to rebuild (with safety design improvements) IH 43 from the Marquette Interchange to Silver Spring Drive. The report makes several recommendations for WisDot as it begins to consider the reconstruction of SWFS, such as WisDot should seek to complete preliminary engineering and environmental impact assessments for the freeway segments.
