First 50 Assessments

Organizational Profile

In line with the goals of technology assessment, ENTECH sought to gather a representative sample of nonprofit organizations in Greater Milwaukee. Because ENTECH operates exclusively in southeastern Wisconsin, the vast majority of participants are in Milwaukee County, with others in Waukesha and surrounding areas.

Most of the organizations participating in the technology assessment were small. This is partially due to the grantmaking guidelines of the Nonprofit Management Fund, which include an annual budget of under $3,000,000. (See the adjacent bar chart for total annual operating budget ranges.) In the organizations assessed, budgeting specifically for technology expenditures is rarely practiced: 54% of organizations could not estimate their annual technology expenditure, and the other 46% had a median technology budget of $7,608 annually.

The missions of the assessed nonprofits included all major sectors, such as arts and culture, community and economic development, etc. “Other” includes foundations, faithbased and environmental organizations. The Types of Organizations figure shows a breakdown of mission areas.

The organizations assessed have an average of 17.2 fulltime employees and 13 part-time employees; 13 (26%) of the organizations have a staff member assigned to technology issues. It should be noted that only 18% (9) of the organizations dedicated all or part of a position to technology issues.
