Technology Planning
Technology planning involves the definition of the longterm strategies a nonprofit will employ to further its mission through technology. As evidenced by the chart, many organizations do not take a strategic approach to technology use. The results of nonexistent or misinformed technology planning are exhibited in all issues presented in this report. For example, the lack of planning directly increases the incidence of problematic technology. Without a plan, nonprofits have no overall context in which to evaluate technology decisions, therefore, seemingly small projects are rarely implemented with a view toward a long-term goal. This results in misdirected, inappropriate and over-budget projects.
Challenge Statement: Nonprofits need technology planning assistance.
Strategy 1: Provide technologyplanning services to nonprofits. This is a “high-touch” solution, which will require significant resources to implement on a sector-wide scale.
Strategy 2: Instruct nonprofit representatives in technology planning procedures. This requires significant resources and commitment from the organization. In addition, this requires a level of organizational capacity that has not been exhibited in the sample population.
Strategy 3: Create a technology planning fund. Supported by local corporations and foundations, a planning fund would distribute the workload to IT consultants in the community. This fund would also provide opportunities for trend analysis similar to the model of the Nonprofit Management Fund.
